Girl Scouts Heart of the South Announces New Community Advisory Board Chair

Girl Scouts Heart of the South welcome Deborah Harris as the new Community Advisory Board (CAB) Chair for the northwest  Mississippi region. She replaces Gwen Woodson as CAB Chair. Gwen will continue to serve on the northwest Mississippi CAB.

Deborah Lanita Harris is a native of Carroll County, Mississippi. She is the oldest of six siblings.  She attended Marshall Elementary and is a 1988 graduate of J. Z. George High School. She attended Mississippi Delta Community College where she received a Computer Technology degree in 1990.  Deborah is married to Byron Harris and is the mother of two children; Fran’Kesha House, who attends the University of Mississippi and is an Adult Lifetime Scout and Byron Harris Jr, a seventh grader at East Middle School in Greenwood.

Deborah is employed as an Operations Assistant in the Mississippi Division of Atmos Energy.  She has been in the gas industry for fourteen years.  She has served as Greenwood Safety Leader for the past six years and Safety President during the latter part of the sixth year. Deborah is very active with her company; she serves as Wellness Champion for her office in Greenwood, MS as well as being a member of the Political  Action Committee (PAC) for Atmos Energy Corporation.

Girl Scouts was introduced to Deborah at an early age. At 6 years old, she became a Brownie Scout in Troop 76 of Marshall Elementary. Her troop leader was Emily O’Bryant. As a Junior Scout, she had the honor of serving as Miss Girl Scout for the annual Christmas parade. Later in life, having a daughter of her own, she refocuses back to Girl Scouts. She and her daughter, Fran’Kesha have been in scouting fourteen years. Deborah started out as a parent volunteer when Fran’Kesha was 5 years old. Within 2 years, she was Assistant Leader in Troop 30212 of Greenwood, MS. She is currently serving her 6th year as Troop Leader for Troop 30093 and her 3rd year as Service Unit Manager for 308 West Greenwood. She works very hard in her County to promote Girl Scouting. She has bridged the gap of Girl Scouting and the Boys/Girls Club in her area. Through this bridge, she has recruited girls that longed to be a Girl Scout. Girl Scouting to Deborah is 365 days a year. When most Troops end in June, she’s doing Girl Scout Summer Softball and recruits Scouts for the next fiscal year.
